Background
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections including strep throat, pneumonia, typhoid fever and certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Doxycycline has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria, including some that are resistant to other antibiotics. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of Doxycycline 200mg capsules to standard treatment of bacterial infections in adult patients.
Methods
This is a single-center, randomized, double-blinded study conducted in patients aged 15 years and older from a tertiary referral center (Hospital de Medicamentos de Artefarma de Madrid) in Spain between November 2006 and November 2008. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 200mg of Doxycycline or standard treatment for bacterial infections, with a 1:1 ratio. Participants received standard therapy with intravenous (IV) doxycycline followed by two daily doses of 400mg of doxycycline per day for 7 days. Doxycycline was taken orally by mouth at the time of randomization and was administered as a single dose on the same day. Patients received standard therapy for the entire duration of the study, except for the period of the study when a single dose was taken.
Results
The mean number of adverse events was 9.3 (range 4–22). The majority of adverse events resolved spontaneously and were mild to moderate in nature (defined as a score of 0 or 1 on the VAS) and transient in nature (defined as a score of 1 or 2 or 3 on the VAS). The most common treatment-related adverse events were diarrhea and gastrointestinal symptoms (1.3%), followed by pneumonia (1.6%), upper respiratory tract infection (1.6%), otitis media (1.6%), and skin and skin structure infection (1.2%). The overall adverse events reported by the patients included headache (1.3%), dyspnea (1.5%), nausea (1.2%), fatigue (1.2%), and insomnia (1.1%). The most common adverse events in the group receiving standard therapy were headache (1.2%) and dyspnea (1.2%).
Conclusion
Doxycycline is an effective and safe drug for the treatment of bacterial infections. The clinical benefit and safety of this medication have been demonstrated in a prospective study.
Note:
Adults over the age of 10 years are more susceptible to side effects due to gastrointestinal and cardiovascular adverse reactions. Patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease or allergic disorders should be started on Doxycycline and continued for the full course of treatment. Patients should avoid the use of the drug in patients with a history of drug-induced hypersensitivity and to avoid the use of any other antibiotics.
Doxycycline is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, but it is not a bactericidal antibiotic, nor an antibiotic of the tetracycline class. Doxycycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria and is also highly effective against many other Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
